The inspection party of General Tanaka was ambushed from two directions somewhere between Pamplona and Pasacao, just south of Sipocot. The guerrillas probably didn't know he was in the group. The Japanese torched the town in retaliation — many inhabitants were killed including women and children. They announced that anyone found further than fifty feet from any road in that sector would be considered a guerrillero and shot. The Tribune and La Vanguardia have nothing on the Gilbert Islands. Nimitz does; he says the fighting there is almost over. It turns out that the Japanese are going to the bodegas holding supplies for American POWs and demanding a few boxes. Some of the contents are appearing in stores. Keller and Menzi worry that people might think they are the ones doing the selling. |
