La Vanguardia tries to pull a fast one: "Vargas reiterates promises of unconditional support by the country to Japan." A picture shows Vargas reading a paper in front of Kuroda. Vargas' shadow-man, Consul Hirota, stands on his left. Vargas and the Consul look like they're about ready to cry. Kuroda looks wisely at the Consul. The Director General looks like a mad bull. Another three Japanese officers stare wildly at Vargas. A great picture — just one big happy family. Incidentally, Maurice went to the Aristocrat Restaurant in Dewey Boulevard and noticed Vargas was there with his whole family, including his night and day shadow-man, Hirota. Maurice's party had finished their meal before Vargas was even served. At one point, a piqued Vargas clapped loudly for service. When he got up and went downstairs for a moment, his shadow-man jumped and followed him "like a puppy." |
