The Japanese allowed the Menzis to spend 40 minutes with their son, Hans, on February 5. Still in his early 30's, the carefree though earnest lad's hair has turned partly gray, and his thin frame is 30 pounds lighter. Food was allowed in (this time only). Despite Japanese promises, Hans got none of the medicines his parents sent to Fort Santiago, not until he was transferred to Bilibid on January. Hans was in Fort Santiago with a mixed group — no chairs, beds, pillows and no talking to each other. "Get me out," he said, "it's tough here." The Japanese hinted he would be released on Kigen-Setsu Day, but changed their mind. |
