Kigen-Setsu — another holiday with the usual Japanese stage-managed parade. "13 Enemy Warships Sunk, 86 Planes Downed in Air-Naval Encounters off Ysabel Island." (No word from the U.S.)

Responding to many articles suggesting the renaming of the Philippines, Pedro Padilla of Navotas, Rizal, wrote a very fine letter in the Public Pulse:

When you say 'Pilipinas' and 'dalagang Pilipina', you have the mental pictures of sun-caressed fields and modest women. It would be destructive of our vast literary heritage from the pens of Rizal and Balagtas to change all that. The name Pilipinas does not necessarily carry the stigma of serfdom. If there is that stigma, then it is present in the minds of people suffering from inferiority complex and nowhere else. The greatness of a people lies in its minds and heart! If we don't take care, we would be swinging the pendulum much too far on the other side, to that side where we had to name every street and park in honor of the headman.

The Scribe: "If most of us today are fooled by Spanish and American histories, it's nobody's fault but ours."
