Manila is abuzz again — the practice blackout and the offer of Independence got everyone's spirits up, and naturally, rumors are rife. Conditions in the South are worsening and the Japanese are threatening to send another punitive expedition. A Spaniard reported exchanging P1,000 for P1,500 military currency there. As he put it, "I could have got P2,000 but I didn't want to take advantage of friends." A lot of goods are sold to Iloilo City from areas outside of Japanese control — where military currency is not accepted — hence the demand. |
