December 8, 1942
Manila "celebrated" the first anniversary of the Pacific War very calmly. According to Doddy Schultze, who was forced to go, it was an uninspiring affair with few spectators. There were speeches gloating over past victories and war aims continuing into the night. I went to Heacock's at 1030 to see the pictures and a display of captured arms. A blow up of a picture used before to show an invisible, fleeing carrier was recaptioned: "Enemy ships flee as Japanese planes approach." Streetcars were free today and jammed — kids had lots of fun going on round-trip joy rides. Two Zeros patrolled at high altitude all day — just in case. La Vanguardia said 200,000 attended. |
