"Contact with Beleaguered City Ceases" [Stalingrad]. Nothing much in La Vanguardia except the usual propaganda. Paredes: "Guerrillas Harm People" (the Japanese for a start); "Resistance is Futile, Declares Commissioner." A Spanish lady saw a truckload of POWs stopped near the Divisoria Market. In no time, a mob of Filipinos gathered around, staring in silence. Suddenly, taking advantage of the slow-witted guards, they rained cigarettes, fruit and canned goods down on the Americans. "Listen," she exploded, "I saw a woman throw a can of condensed milk — worth P2.50, mind you — at the Americans!" Being a stormy night, radio reception is poor and I had to tone it down due to our new Japanese neighbors. Radio Tokyo said the U.S. Fleet is now more than half sunk or severely damaged, and reminded America it could be more effective on the Atlantic. |
