Papers talk about the released prisoners: "Filipinos Given Chance to Live in Peace." Program extended to all provinces except Mindoro, Samar, Leyte, Negros, Panay, Palawan and Sulu. Hans Menzi is still missing after 35 days — he's in Fort Santiago. One day at noon last week, a car drove up to the Menzi house and disgorged a Japanese officer who barely spoke English. After introductions, the officer calmly sat down and accepted a cocktail while the Menzis hurriedly dressed and packed their bags, knowing not what to expect. Then the Menzis tried to make awkward conversation with the officer — Another cocktail? Some deviled ham biscuits? Cigarette? "Yes, thank you." Time passed agonizingly until 1315, when the officer finally cleared his throat and asked if "this" was the French Consulate? It seems that he had a lunch engagement next door. A very relieved Mr. Menzi sent him over in his own dokar. When the officer's chauffeur returned to pick him up, it took a similar effort to convince him that he should go next door. |
