The Japanese will release all Filipino POWs from the Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao provinces. Too many prisoners have died under custody, most due to disease and the lack of medical care and medicines. Perrenoud's son, Tony, died in prison 15 days after he was reported to be in good health — probably of malaria. Without mosquito nets, many sleep with blankets over their head. The Japanese are tired of sick prisoners and are determined to make them the responsibility of someone else. Hans Menzi is back at Fort Santiago — too much talking, or what? I played croquet with him only last Tuesday. I often feel that I'll be next, though discretion has kept me free and writing. |
