Today is the 5th anniversary of the China Incident and Manila wasn't allowed to forget it. The Tribune has a picture supplement and the Sunday News put out a special edition containing lengthy articles by Lt. Col. Katsuya as well as Vargas and Pio Duran. An article by a Mr. Yahagi boasts that Japan lost 106,000 troops during the years of fighting but Chungking suffered 5 million casualties — a lot of casualties for what F. M. Villanueva of the Sunday News, called a "punitive and correctional campaign." Incidentally, the papers have taken Rommel to within 24 kilometers from Alexandria then became silent, except for the repeated threat of severe punishment if you're caught disseminating false news.
