Teodoro the Great, a lad who used to run errands for me at the races, showed up at the store today. As usual, he's been living a life way over his head, working without pay for the Philippine Red Cross for food and lodging. He brought back no information on Joe from a tour that started at Bataan and ended in Tarlac. Says the life of a prisoner is a pitiful lot. The Japanese take their money, wristwatches, and other personal effects; give them extremely little to eat, and generally treat the Americans cruelly, while the Filipinos get a little mercy. "I don't know why the Japs treat the Filipinos better than the Americans," he said. "The Filipinos never took Japanese prisoners (alive, he meant), while the Americans tried to protect them." |
