NAZIS WON'T QUIT TO REDS; HITLER'S DEATH ANNOUNCED.

Excerpts from "WE RETURN TO THE PHILIPPINES" — a Pamphlet for U.S. soldiers:

"There are a number of reasons why we are going into the Philippines. Some of them are reasons of honor, others are reasons of plain military science." There were four Filipinos for every American in Bataan, it says, including six out of sixteen Generals. The Filipinos were learning Christianity when wild Indians still owned Brooklyn, so "don't talk down to a Filipino or you may end up feeling pretty silly."

Ninety days have past since the Sixth Army hit Manila and conditions are still stagnant and with poor prospects for the near term. Prices are back to 1943 levels. We still have no gas, transportation, telephone, radio, electricity, newspaper delivery, and there's a shortage of water. The middle class is in dire straits. Armed bandits are very active in the provinces, especially Panay. The Sotelos received word that gangs are stripping their Iloilo farm on a daily basis.

"Americans Enter Davao" — what's left of it, anyway.

Today Santamaria received the first cable from Pierce since January 27, 1941, giving us some quotations as well as our positions in U.S. stocks and commodities. Our clients did very well during the war. "Can't unblock account at present.... Happy to hear you are safe."
