Radio Tokyo's 15-minute morning news had only one sentence on Leyte, and that was about an action West of Carigara on November 12 to 17 in which the Americans suffered 112 casualties — 11 to 16 days ago! Tribune: "Five More U.S. Warships Sunk" — a Kamikaze unit and Japanese submarines sank 3 carriers, a large cruiser and a destroyer off Luzon. NEWS: Torrential rains have brought fighting to a standstill in Leyte. Results of last Saturday's U.S. Task Force raid off Luzon have been upped to 58 ships sunk or damaged. The Japanese had 58 planes shot down, 29 destroyed on the ground and 32 damaged — total 119. I was visiting a family when one member said of another: "He's smart, and thriving, y'know ... made P30,000 in a single car deal." I froze then decided to remain silent, though I almost regret it now. First, it's dishonest to persuade someone to sell his car at less than half of what it's worth. Second, WHO was the buyer? And here I am selling stocks and bonds at a commission of 2.5 to 5% exclusively. I must be some sucker. |
