Tribune: "41 Planes downed, cruiser damaged in Ogasawara [Bonins] area" — Daihon-ei. La Vanguardia's earlier coverage of the same battles only succeeded in "downing" 21 planes. (The U.S. admitted losing 16.) Neither paper mentioned the convoy virtually wiped out around the Bonins and Volcano Islands by an American Task Force.

"Enemy plane appears over Davao twice." At 0100 on August 6, a "large-sized" plane "appeared over the city, and after dropping three small bombs into the sea, fled causing no damage.... Today [August 7], another enemy plane approached the same area, but took to flight before reaching Davao."

Boix tells me the Japanese asked the Kreills and the Kaufmanns to leave their houses. The Japanese also paid a second visit to the Campos-Rueda home, but fortunately, Mr. Campos was ill. (I've got a fever and a headache as I write this ... not to mention a bad stomach too.)
