Daihon-ei says the enemy broke through their last defensive line in Tinian, with the result that "the war situation on the Island now indicates complicated aspects." (Like defeat, eh?) "All-out National Effort urged by Premier Koiso." He expects a landing in Japan. "American attempt to break through in Normandy foiled" — but all places mentioned are fresh names. The Russians were driven back from Warsaw, but German troops "disengaged" and "moved to a new position further north." Pedro J. Campos, 43, President of the Bank of Philippine Islands, died of a sudden cerebral hemorrhage. I last spoke to him in mid-May. La Vanguardia informed us that Manuel L. Quezon died in New York yesterday. The news was received sadly and quietly in Manila. |
