Tribune: "Nippon units down 74 more foe planes in Central Pacific." Daihon-ei admits the loss of "30 planes and five ships," plus shelling in the Bonins. The next article admits the shelling of Guam and air attacks against Rota, Palau and Pagan Island. "Independence offer by Washington seen as clever maneuver." MalacaƱan's response: "Now that our relations with the U.S. have been completely severed by the war, and we have already established our own independent government.... We cannot do less than what other peoples similarly situated would and should do." Er ... fight? News: An American Task Force returned to crush a small Japanese convoy attempting to resupply the Bonins. They sank five ships, probably sank another six, and downed 21 planes. |
