Two Filipinos, said to have been Japanese spies, were shot and killed in Plaza Moraga yesterday. The Japanese Military Police occupied two houses at the end of Manga Avenue, 300 meters from ours, moving in with eight to ten armed Filipinos. Our neighborhood might be peaceful for a while, but Manila is becoming a lawless city. You'd think the house directly opposite the central police headquarters in San Marcelino would be relatively safe. Well, it was robbed in broad daylight. Someone tipped us that the Japanese are watching us at the Escolta — I presume Keller, Schaer, George and I. Could "Sugar" Sato be doing it? A couple of old time Japanese who have been here since before the war have all but admitted to their friends that the jig is up. Tribune: "Fighting at close quarters raging" — in Saipan. "U.S. uses strongest fleet in Marianas" — includes 20 large carriers in addition to small carriers, battleships, cruisers and other auxiliary warships.... The air arm of the force is estimated at 1,000 planes"! Piñol had his pocket watch stolen in a streetcar. He heard a click, got the thought, put his hand in his pocket ... too late. The thief had cut the chain with pliers. |
