Tribune: "13 enemy warships blasted in Central Pacific Waters" — Daihon-ei's version of previous announcements from a Central Pacific Base. "U.S. admits difficulties in Marianas ... Nimitz announces 8,752 casualties in Saipan fighting." It's a lot for such a small island, but indicative of the bitter struggle and the rush to secure the airfield. "Pacific battles worry Americans" — really about their disappointment that no big naval battle took place in Marianas. Some of the first KGEX broadcasts to P.I. in local dialects are about air raid precautions. After a tour of the Pacific, an American Legion Commander said the consensus opinion is that P.I. will be occupied by Christmas. A lot can happen before then. Where does Manila get its news? Best source is any radio shop — all the technicians are listening. Next are the gadget boys — almost any expert has learned how to fix their radios. Last are the "original" boys who never declared their radios in the first place. Maurice is getting married to Maria Teresa "Chichita" Sotelo next Sunday.
