Tribune: "Nippon forces check enemy counter-drives.... Indo-Japanese units move towards Imphal from three directions.... Mopping up drive in Kohima ends" — which is just what the British said yesterday: the Kohima-Dimapur road is open. Splashes: "By respecting the dignity of labor, we can enhance the dignity of the nation." Only the labor he talks about is not wanted for national construction but for building new Japanese airfields. The Japanese are reinforcing their air force here for the coming battle. After two years of seeing obsolete Japanese planes, we're seeing increasing numbers of newer (still technically obsolete) planes. Mr. Menzi, my croquet-playing pal, died suddenly last night at the PGH at the age of 67. I've known him since I was a kid; our families have lived in Manga Avenue since 1921. Even the German Club, which sent him to Villamor Hall early in the occupation, sent his family a condolence letter. |
