La Vanguardia: "17th British Division suffers total annihilation." Pedro Aunario surprised us with a particularly gory article, using Italy as an example. Excerpt: "Entire villages burning day and night, carbonized bodies of humans and animals, unburied cadavers.... God save us from such an immense agony." He described Manila suffering such a fate. It's been part of regular discussions here among friends: What could happen? What should we do? How to prepare? We go around with doomed but cheerful expressions, pretending to be brave, hoping things will work out somehow. Joe Keesey is a typical example: "The day will come when we'll have to think and think fast. If we make a correct split-second judgement in a pinch we'll get through. I'll meet the problem when it comes." His brother, Bob, is an American prisoner working in the Piers for over a year now. He prefers it over Cabanatuan. |
