La Vanguardia: "Japan defends itself with full force in the Marshall Islands.... Enemy suffers tremendous losses in landing attacks." All they can say is that "part" of the landing groups were "repelled." Commentator says that 845 planes were shot down in January over Rabaul alone, and since Japanese announcements are "conservative," the total must be at least twice that! Sharp increases in income and other taxes passed by the Assembly last week dealt the last blow to the two-year boom. The legislature thought the Buy and Sell crowd had made things tough for the masses by forcing prices up, but nothing could be further from the truth. The Buy and Sell crowd spent money freely, and whilst they had it, the people had it too. Now, neither have money while living costs continue to rise. |
