Tribune: "Ten more bills passed as Assembly closes session" — that's sixty enactments during the first regular session. There's no need for long debates — "Laurel Granted Emergency Powers by Legislature." Splashes, Our Today, and Maharajah write about preparedness and blackouts. Circulating in town is a timely five-page report (originating in Germany and added to in Japan) about bombing: what to expect, how to prepare, what medicines to stock and so on. Newsreel No. 14 showed the bombing of Rome and the spectacular burning of Hamburg (the audience loved it). The narrator snickered, "But here in the Philippines, the invincible Japanese Air Armada...." Commentator: All about God being on the side of the Axis. Non-Christians today seem to hold a patent on Christian teachings, he says. La Vanguardia: "50,000 have already presented themselves in Leyte ... hundreds are still surrendering daily" — a joke. "More rice arrives in Manila" — and rice rations are down to 60 grams daily. |
