Commentator called the Quezon government's treaty with the U.S. for the permanent lease of military base facilities here, "High Treason." The news only cheered Filipinos. Women received much-needed items from the American Red Cross kits — from mascara and nail polish to girdles and Kotex. The medicines alone are supposed to have cost 5-1/2 million dollars — easily worth almost P100 million here. How many friends did Uncle Sam win by his generous display? Hardly any — for all were her friends to begin with. But Wanda, a plucky Dutch girl, choked up trying to tell me how much Klim Milk meant to her, plus butter, and cheese. They came in the nick of time too — right after her third death-cheating operation. To hear her talk, Uncle Sam loves no one but her. Quite a few internees have more or less gotten excused permanently from Santo Tomas for feigned illnesses. Now the Hospitals are trying to get them to vacate the choicest rooms to allow space for serious patients who need the rooms badly. The boys are putting up a fight to stay where they are. I can think of two that ought to get thoroughly booted — into Fort Santiago no less. |
