J.G. Sanvictores

Tribune: "Sanvictores Named Food Administrator." He gets WIDE powers; the man is earnest — I've heard no disparaging remarks about his integrity — but I think he's going to be made the goat.

E.M.: "Our pre-war national economy was fundamentally unsound." At least we could eat then. Commentator, behind the times as usual, talks about ferocious ground combat in Tarawa and Makin, and says the Americans are in "urgent need of reinforcements."

Bought two bottles of Milk of Magnesia at P2.94 each, and had to give my residence tax number. This explain's yesterday's Nakashima incident and today's line at the Escolta Drug Store. The Japanese took over Sterlings' Products' goods and distributed part to the Drug Retailers Association at fixed prices on the understanding that sales must only be at the prescribed retail price. So, Milk of Magnesia is P2.94 there but P20 everywhere else? Presto, the Buy and Sell group is off on a spree. The Drug stores make only 20% and would rather see it go to people who need it rather than profiteers, which is the point of Nakashima's plan. After all, he's made a terrific fortune already.
