Tribune: "Chandra Bose arrives ... guest of the Republic." He says Britain's fate is sealed. "Fierce Fighting in Gilbert Group" — a report on the American landings. Page 1 describes three raids on Torokina by Japanese planes, all of which (all three of them) returned unscathed. An eight-year old kid in the neighborhood flashed a Victory sign at a passing truck with American POWs. He was promptly slapped and hauled off. A similar incident occurred on the other side of the Santa Mesa Bridge — he was just slapped. The Japanese are touchy again. Wires were stolen at Hillcrest for the ninth time. Ignoring the death penalty, wire-snatchers took four telephone-pole lengths of double wire. The boys who depend on Keller's radio will be disappointed. |
