Tribune: "Mussolini Forms New Government as Badoglio Surrenders." The new Italian Fascist Government in the north issued its proclamation from Chiasso (I can't even find it on the map). Ignacio Javier's broadcast intimated that the Italians were preparing fortifications against the Germans as well back as July! So ... the Americans have moved past Naples, the Italian Navy has left Spezia for allied ports, Italian planes are streaming into Sicily and Cyprus, and Mussolini is now a mountain guerilla. Commentator, now recovered from the Italian setback, turned his attention to Burma: "1944 has been earmarked for the second epoch-making Japanese grand offensive." He's counting on Burma because he can't count on Salamaua and Lae holding out against MacArthur. |
