It's July all right: All inter-island traffic is paralyzed after a week of continuous bad weather. Returning home tonight, I found all San Luis and Santa Mesa before the bridge flooded. Pasay is also flooded and the streetcars are not running. Tribune: "Pope condemns Rome Attack." The Pope's letter to Cardinal Salvaggiani has one memorable quotation: "Painful experience proves once more that despite all precautions one may take, it is almost impossible to avoid destruction of venerable buildings on the sacred soils of Rome." What's News? A bloody battle is on in Catania between the Germans and the British 8th Army. Marsala was taken in the west and the Americans are nearing Palermo on the east. In Russia, the encirclement of Orel is almost complete. In the South Pacific, Munda is all but finished and the Japanese are on their last legs in New Georgia. Air attacks on Burma are at a peak. |
