Santa Mesa is abuzz about last night's shooting of two Japanese officers on Pureza Street — about a half-mile from our house near the National Development Company and where many Japanese live. One officer bled to death on the street while the terrified populace hid indoors, afraid to render aid lest they be mistaken for the perpetrators. Tribune: "P.I. Group Sent to Japan ... Guinto heads the delegation of 19 men.... Party will survey conditions in Japan to promote better understanding of Nippon." The inspection committee will be feted, given tours of arms factories, and meet important people, but you can be sure of one thing: they won't see the real Japan. |
