"Cebu-Naga Railroad Line Opens Today" — all 22 kilometers of it. The article tries to squelch rumors that guerrillas are very active in Cebu. Keller, a decent and unselfish Swiss, had been on his way home when war stranded him in Manila. He speaks Japanese, a skill that made him such an indispensable troubleshooter for the Swiss nationals and companies here that they put him on a "retainer." The Swiss only have an honorary consul, so Keller was attached to the consular staff — he's allowed shortwave privileges to listen to Berne. Keller succeeds in ironing out the many problems with the Japanese, including the sticky job of collecting payments from the Japanese Navy. For that and the considerable risks he takes, he gets paid a pittance. |
