U.S. belatedly announced the loss of cruisers Quincy, Vincennes and Astoria on August 8 and 9 in the Solomons. It would have sounded terrible if they'd admitted it earlier. Today one is able to even say it was worthwhile in view of recent, and still increasing, Japanese losses.
