September 7, 1942 — "Street Fighting in Stalingrad"

Pacifico Ledesma says a friend just back from Negros confirmed that guerrillas killed some Japanese civilians there. This adds to reports of the killing of a few hacenderos and the burning of some sugar centrals there. Apparently it's hard to distinguish between the guerrillas and roving bandits. A German from Botica Boie told me of a Spaniard who was approached for rice. He readily gave it, but couldn't resist giving them a piece of his mind too. The boys came back two hours later and wounded him with a shot — just for spite.

The Japanese language campaign seems to be working in reverse. Instead of arigatou and sayonara in the store, lately we've been hearing more thank-you's and good-bye's from the Japanese.
