Heard from Paul Meyer that one Japanese fellow told him that he wasn't fooled by Filipino lip service. "We Japs know that if we ever get into difficulties here, we'll have to turn to the Americans for protection" — from the Filipinos! If things are rough in Negros, they're equally bad in Mindanao. Parellada secured all the necessary military passes, free passage and monetary aid from a Japanese company to get his hacienda in Cotabato up and running again. The Japanese were most eager to help. He was all set to go when he ran into Gov. Alfonso Pablo, who told him that the Moros there have been running wild, killing Chinese, wealthy Filipinos and Spaniards. Net result, Parellada is going nowhere. |
