I read a note from Dick Hendricks on conditions in Cabanatuan. None of five packages sent to him got through, but he did get two of the notes. He said many are ill, mostly of malaria, there are no medicines, and the quality of the food had deteriorated. Several Filipinos who took messages from U.S. prisoners for delivery to Manila had been shot. The prisoners are aware of what happened and doubtless will not write until things cool down. I wanted to be among the last to register my radios, but when I turned up today I found the whole thing has been cancelled for the time being, pending certain rule changes. Most likely they'll combine registration with a process of disabling shortwave reception. The result will be a flood of rumors even more damaging to the Japanese than the real news. |
