"British quit at El Alamein," says the Tribune quoting a Domei dispatch from Rome dated July 9 (pure baloney). I'm more worried about the continuing German sinkings of allied ships. A July 8 Domei dispatch from Lisbon says, "According to report from Washington, the U.S. Navy Department have been sunk by Axis submarines" — a misprint, of course, but it sure got a lot of laughs here. A Spaniard who used to be in the Constabulary dropped into the store to tell me he was with Joe the day after Bataan fell. He was split into another group when the march to San Fernando began. Says they walked 113 kilometers in two days and nights with only two meals. |
