Tribune: "100,000 brave noon day sun to hear speeches." (Yesterday's temperature at 1530 reached 103.3F [39.6C] — last seen 57 years ago.) The paper's ten pictures show that not more than 25,000 were present — all coerced by their bosses, who were themselves coerced by the Japanese. The route was lined with soldiers sporting bayonets. If you were caught in the crowd, there was no way out. Streets are being renamed: Dewey Boulevard becomes O-Heiwa [Peace] Boulevard; Harrison Boulevard, Koa [Rising Sun] Boulevard; Wallace Field, Plaza Bagong [New] Filipinas; Fort Mckinley, Sakura-Heiei; Fort Santiago, Fuji-Heiei; Cuartel de España, Yamato-Heiei; Zablan Field, Kita-Hikoujou; Nielson, Higashi Hikoujou. I bet the names won't stick. What's funny is that the paper says the C-in-C accepted Vargas' suggestion for the changes. |
