The Japanese are on a slight rampage, determined to have everyone get a Japanese residence certificate. I sent Ramon at the store to the Army-Navy YMCA Building to get one for himself, Maurice and me. It took him two hours though he almost got crushed by the crowd. On the way to the store Lolita saw a man get beaten and left for dead on the sidewalk. At noon I saw another man in a similar state tied to a pole by Heacock’s side entrance. By these methods the Japanese intend to curtail looting but it’s a sure bet these poor fellows didn’t get a fair hearing. Got both KGEI and London on the radio tonight on the Singapore landings. The BBC described it as “enemy infiltrations”; KGEI said the landings were made “in strength”, while Domei had them “mopping up”! |
