Richter lost his mother. He was still fuming against the Japanese despite being the only one of the four that cottoned up to them. He told me a story similar to the René Rius case, only it may have been in the building next door. More and more the pattern shapes up against two or three devilish Japanese commanders. All but one of the Canillas family perished on the south side. Their daughter, Mary, is alive because she was visiting the north side when the battle began. I got out of the place shaking my head. I'm not even past the beginning in my search for the facts, but I learned one thing today after hearing these survivors speak not in the measured tones I expected but with a passionate hatred for the Japanese.
