The Alert sounded at 0720, followed by the air raid signal at 0815 and again at 0825. Only Japanese fighters were seen patrolling overhead. The Formosa propaganda blitz continues in the Tribune: "Nippon Navy chases enemy ... in hot pursuit to deal an annihilative blow to the fleeing enemy ... an all-out attack." "Foe propaganda machine silent on Taiwan Losses" — and how! Editorial: "Desperate enemy suffers disaster." "Flagship of enemy task force believed sunk off Taiwan" — with Vice Admiral Mitscher on board. "Defeat ... heaviest blow since Pearl Harbor." And it goes on and on. With Nimitz still silent 72 hours after the event, San Francisco and Australia can only paint a confusing picture. The real news is MacArthur's fourth BIG raid on Balikpapan (starting fires visible for 60 miles) plus raids on the usual Pacific targets, almost too numerous to mention. Nimitz at last: The Japanese navy has again refused to answer the challenge and has withdrawn to safety. The American force remains unimpaired — "no damage of any consequence to our bombers or carriers." The American Task Force is still attacking Luzon, beginning a second week of sustained carrier attacks. |
