Some panic is evident by the way Japanese officials are trying to concentrate in Manga Avenue and not get left behind. We got confirmation today that the Japanese Embassy is moving into our street, with Ambassador Murata probably taking Bachrach's White House. Some 70 members of their entourage will move there and into the houses of the Siys and Barretos. If that's too tight, then our large house and garden next door will be in peril despite the Kempeitai seal. Meanwhile, our basement is filling up with furniture from the five ousted families. We already have three cars including mine, one motorcycle plus one yet to come, and trunks and boxes galore. I'm afraid to leave the house for fear the Japanese will take it while I'm away. Suppose I hadn't been around last Saturday? The Bernards are close to the French Consul (Vichy) and the Japanese Embassy. After promising to help them, the Embassy sent a man to place a seal on their house, but he balked in fear when he saw the Kempeitai seal. No one in Manga Avenue wants to take the Bernards in, which places the Embassy in a sticky situation. As we still have some space, we'll do it ... if the Kempeitai asks us to. |
