We were on Alert status all day today. Best guess is Luzon has been bombed or at least photographed. A good source says MacArthur told guerrillas in Sorsogon to be ready because the Americans would be there before October 31. Meanwhile, people here are begging for MacArthur to drop some real bombs — the sooner the better. Even Ma, who scares plenty at the thought of a detonation, can't wait. If it's true that three billion pesos of Japanese military currency are in circulation, then that ends all hope of redemption at a nominal 5% to 10%. The exchange rate is around 19 to 1 and dropping. As for rice, a single sack now goes for P2,500! No mention of Europe in today's papers. I note that our press coverage of the bombing of Japanese positions lately has averaged one admission for every 20 bombings — 5%! |
