La Vanguardia: "Two more attacks on Japan frustrated" — ten [planes] shot down over Kyushu and China. The Japanese lost three — believed to have crashed into American planes. Damage over the two nights was "insignificant." Radio confirmed the Nagasaki and Yawata Iron and Steelworks were hit. Four planes were lost on the first raid, but 12 to 15 Japanese fighters were shot down. No details on losses for the second raid. General Stilwell's 14th Air Force had a field day over Hongkong and parts of the Pacific. One Japanese heavy cruiser and two large freighters were sunk east of Hongkong. MacArthur announced that Japanese planes have abandoned Halmahera airfields for points "west" (the Philippines?). Ceram, Halmahera and the Celebes were hit, tightening a noose around Mindanao. |
