March 11, 1944 — Nippon Army Day
Tribune: "City Air Raid Drill Today" — a weak air show with 1930s vintage planes. Three dive-bombers with 50kg bombs attacked an imaginary cruiser on land, while four fighters attacked an old transport towing a red streamer. "Thousands of onlookers gazed into clear blue sky, fascinated," said the article. La Vanguardia: "Laurel orders holders of unlicensed firearms to turn them in." He gives them 120 days to comply! "Successful Pacification Campaign Completed in Leyte, Reports Gullas." On a hill near Alangalang, he administered the oath to "2,150 guerrilleros armed with lances." The blackout practice was short-lived. Many of us in Manga Avenue took a walk to enjoy the nice breeze and full moon. No Japanese planes were up inspecting the blackout. |
