A spectacular Daihon-ei announcement yesterday afternoon has Manila wondering if it's related to the practice blackouts. In full:

The Imperial Japanese Army and Navy Units are engaging a powerful enemy force which began attacking the Marshall Islands from the morning of January 30. Heavy hostilities are in progress.

"Rice Cards Issued" — starting today. Ignore the "240-grams" printed on the card, says Biba, it's good for only "120-grams"!

Moans can be heard coming from a house between the church and brewery at San Miguel that's rumored to be a miniature version of Fort Santiago. A joke says Buencamino and Vargas are there for selling Naric rice at fantastic prices; even Elsa O'Farrell, the harpist, is there for helping the guerrillas.

The Spanish community wired Franco asking for a ship to evacuate their women and children — urgently. The cable discussed local conditions, and the Japanese said it would be censored — probably in Tokyo. I doubt if they will let the Spaniards go after the damaging revelations of the three American escapees.

La Vanguardia quoted Admiral King saying: "The war hasn't been won." Well, he said this too on the radio: "After Rabaul and the Marshalls, we shall liberate the Philippines."

News: A large concentration of American warships plus carrier and land-based planes are blasting the Marshall Islands.
