Sunday Tribune: "14,000 guerrillas now cooperate" — since the start of the Amnesty period.

E.M. explains that the Japanese are "refraining from making us air-raid-minded" because it might lead us to "fearfully expect such attacks." Actually, Filipinos can hardly wait for them.

Yesterday, the Santo Tomas chief decided to tour the hospitals in the company of a Dr. Cho. I was warned the night before to stay away by a phone call. Given the all clear at noon today, I visited Mary Chiles' Hospital and St. Joseph's. The inspection group arrived at Mary Chiles' at 1100, and the doctor in charge immediately took the distinguished visitors to see the most serious cases, giving ample time for cases not definitely ill to get into bed and do some feigning. I got a laugh when I heard they visited Room 16 on the ground floor and found Flannery, McCaren and Connor in bed during daytime. I haven't seen any of them in bed in the last three weeks!
