Walking home last night I was handed a typewritten page with news, the most sensational of which said that a raid on Wewak, New Guinea, cost the Japanese 215 planes for a loss of 3 on our part. All Manila knew about it today. Tribune: "Measures adopted to prevent outbreak of cholera." The authorities deny there is an outbreak. As we say here: Reverse the Tribune and you have the truth. "10 Additional Telegraph Stations Opened." Who uses the telegraph nowadays? The emphasis on coastal points indicates it is an elaborate warning system against approaching bombers. Ignacio Javier tonight: "Nippon's aggressive, impressive policy in East Asia is not oppressive except when opposed" — the last three words slipped in so casually that you'd hardly notice their significance. |
