I've found a better way to listen to the radio — in a large closet near the dining room with the aerial strung all over the back porch. I can tune in to longwave at full blast. I decided to turn down Manolo's offer of a 7-tube Stromberg-Carlson for P85. The seller is chief mechanic Guintos of the reconditioning office. He warned that a house-to-house inspection of reconditioned radios starts in a couple of weeks. The current Allied campaign to underrate their position in the South Pacific doesn't fool the Japanese here. From the crack of dawn till noon, planes patrol overhead and anti-aircraft batteries are manned. An afternoon attack would catch them sleeping but that would require a night landing on the return trip. They figure the Allies are not up to that. |
