A streetcar inspector tried to control the crowd trying to get aboard before those trying to exit, and after a struggle with much cussin' and sweatin' finally managed to slam the door shut. As he started to collect fares and the streetcar started moving, someone forced the door open from the outside. The conductor turned and started to bawl the newcomer out before realizing it was a Japanese civilian. The slap in the puss he earned blew up six months' of Japanese propaganda. The wonder, said my reliable witness, was why the crowd didn't throw the Japanese out. |
