"Food Shortage Becomes Big U.S. Problem." The problem will be here. There are more fishing boats than ever before, but fish is scarce because the Japanese keep the biggest and best for themselves. Rice is being hoarded because people expect a one-month suspension of rations. Rice planters have to feed both the Japanese and the guerrillas. People are leaving coconuts in the trees because the fixed prices are low.... Some smart Cebuanos are saying that the Japanese will evacuate Cebu. "Why not," says one, "all they have is the city itself, and they can't even get supplies from out of town." |
