"Officials Hail Revival of Sugar Industry in P.I.... A new chapter in the economic history of the New Philippines."

Assurance was made that the readjustment ... will be done in such a way as to ... save [sugar investors] from ruin, find new uses for sugar and its by-products, and bring about happiness and contentment to the thousands of people dependent upon the industry as a means of livelihood.

We had two-years' stock of sugar. What wasn't sent to Japan or allocated for making alcohol fuel is stuck in guerilla territory. Thirteen months later the Japanese realize we need more, so now we should "rejoice."

Vargas asks us to display our flags for tomorrow's parade — Japanese flags, that is — as ours are not recognized.
