The Tribune Editorial manages to mix up, in its usual way, the spirit of Christmas with Japan's goodwill and benevolence. The Japanese goodwill blitz is being undermined by their propaganda. Mrs. Connor and Frances joined us for lunch and told us that the camp received and distributed British food packages. Frances told me of an American lady who warned her on December 15: "Stick close to the building today, Frances — the boys are coming back." The lady is one of two members of the exclusive "three-day club." Went to a party in the afternoon that ran until midnight. I learned there that Morato came out of Fort Santiago with tuberculosis. Some of the Hemady employees were also among those released for Christmas. One guy looked well, I thought. "Hell, you should have seen him before he went in," said another, spreading his arms wide, "he was 'this fat.'" |
